Scope of Search

Consistent with the university's objective of attracting a diversified pool of highly qualified candidates, the following minimum recruitment efforts shall be undertaken. Departments are encouraged to expand their recruitment efforts beyond these minimum requirements to broaden their outreach. The Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity can provide resource assistance targeting underutilized or underrepresented populations.

  • A NATIONAL search shall be conducted and remain open for a minimum of four weeks for the following:

    Officers of Instruction and Research: All tenure-related, career and visiting positions with the rank of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Senior Instructor, Instructor, Senior Research Associate, Research Associate or Postdoctoral Research Associate.

    Officers of Administration: All 50% or greater positions designated by the President or Vice-Presidents as Directors or Associate Directors of major administrative units.

  • A REGIONAL search (West Coast or Pacific Northwest) shall be conducted and remain open for a minimum of two weeks for the following:

    Officers of Research: All positions with the rank of Senior Research Assistant or Research Assistant.

    Officers of Administration: All 50% or greater positions except those Director and Associate Director positions that require a national search.

  • A LOCAL search (Lane County and surrounding areas) shall be conducted and remain open for a minimum of two weeks for the following:

    Officers of Administration: All positions at less than 50%.

Exceptions to the above recruitment requirements and the appropriate procedures are listed below.

  1. Part-time, temporary and limited duration appointments can be made for adjunct officers of instruction or research through the open applicant pool process.

  2. Direct hires (an appointment without a search) will be considered on an exceptional basis only. A memo requesting a waiver from recruitment requirements explaining the circumstances in detail and providing a justification should be submitted to the Affirmative Action Director.

  3. Post-retirement appointments for UO retirees do not require a search if the work assignment is similar to the employee’s pre-retirement work.
