Special Classes of NTTF Appointments
Visiting Appointments: Generally the open applicant pool process is NOT appropriate for visiting appointments. Where the need for a .50 FTE or greater visiting faculty appointment anticipated for two terms or more is known in advance, the hiring department should conduct an individual search. However, sometimes a need is not known in advance or a department may have an unanticipated opportunity to benefit from a limited duration visiting appointment of a candidate on sabbatical or other leave from another institution who has research and/or teaching interests that would benefit the hiring department. In those limited circumstances, the open applicant pool process can be used to hire visiting faculty.
Postdoctoral Research Associates: Postdoctoral research associates hired through the applicant pool process are an exception to the three year renewal rule if the pool has been advertised nationally. Based on the fact that these appointments are limited in duration, they can be renewed for up to a total of five years (appointments are limited to six years total).
