Annual notice issued by the Office of Human Resources and the Office of the Provost.
The University of Oregon is committed to equity, inclusion, and providing an environment free from discrimination and harassment. We are writing to remind faculty, staff, graduate employees, student employees, and supervisors about our expectation that we all work together to create a respectful working and learning environment.
We recognize the demands of our jobs and challenges in our personal lives can occasionally lead to stress. However, it is never appropriate to vent frustrations by acting in a demeaning, threatening, or verbally abusive manner. Yelling or cursing at others, or engaging in intimidating behaviors are examples of violations of our respectful workplace expectations. Use good judgment and do not act in ways likely to diminish others’ sense of safety, inclusion, and respect in the workplace, as highlighted in the Community Standards Affirmation and in applicable collective bargaining agreements.
If you are a supervisor or unit head, pay close attention to the quality of interactions in your unit. We expect you to model behavior that creates an inclusive and respectful climate for all. We also expect that you will swiftly address inappropriate behavior that occurs in your unit. Concerns raised by SEIU employees should be addressed as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days from the occurrence of the incident as outlined in Article 64: Mutual Respect of the SEIU collective bargaining agreement. The campus resources provided below can answer questions, offer advice about addressing problematic behaviors, and offer more information about creating a respectful environment.
If you have witnessed or been the target of inappropriate behavior, we urge you to talk with your supervisor or unit head, and/or contact one of the resources listed below. It is important to note that the University of Oregon prohibits unlawful discrimination. Contact the Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance (OICRC) to discuss concerns or make a report of discrimination, harassment, or related retaliation. All employees – faculty, graduate employees, staff, and supervisors – have specific obligations to report prohibited discrimination and should understand these responsibilities by reviewing the Employee Responsibilities webpage on the OICRC website.
Thank you for helping to foster an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment at the University of Oregon. Again, if you have questions or concerns, please contact these resources.
