Can I adjust a deadline or alter my workload if I can’t fit in assignments when I use partial day absence?
Generally, no. It is expected that an OA will complete their duties consistent with deadlines and other parameters, whether or not the OA uses partial day absences. Please note that other rules apply if you are using intermittent FMLA leave. For related questions, contact the HR leaves coordinator.
Do I need to check with my supervisor when I use partial day absences?
It is generally expected that an exempt OA will communicate with their supervisor in advance of anticipated absences to ensure that partial day absences do not interfere with the work of the office. More detailed expectations may be communicated at the unit level. Employees should understand that to meet operational needs, they may be expected to work despite their interest in using a partial day absence.
Can I use partial day absence if I leave to go home because I am sick?
Maybe. It depends on how long you are out. If your absence is more than 4 hours, you should be using sick leave. It is useful to consider that if you use a partial day absence, you are still responsible for meeting all deadlines and completing all duties. If you use sick time, your supervisor may be more likely to adjust your workload or deadlines.
Can I use partial day absence on a regular basis? What if I have repeating appointments (e.g. weekly physical therapy appointments)?
Partial day absences are generally not meant to be used on a regular basis. However, there may be situations in which an exempt OA can be out of the office on a regular basis if they work out a plan with their supervisor that ensures all work is accomplished without negatively impacting operations.
Can I use partial day absence if I work less than 1.0 FTE?
Reduced and part-time salaried employees should talk with their supervisor and/or HR’s employee and labor relations team.
